I love that I attached it to the caption "I love to write to help others". I equate the image of helping others to a little black girl declaring she loves her hair because I recognize there are serious emotional, societal and conceptual issues in the world that aren't as publicly addressed as they should be i.e the European standard of beauty.Being able to relate to literature, or songs, or TV shows or blogs as a person who feels plagued with a certain issue provides a sense of relief for the person. Little girls with cancer owning a barbie doll with no hair, or child in wheel chair watching a handicapped child win a race can truly change the life of that child and I want to be behind those movies or books.
My least favorite aspect of my video was the limitation in
caption length and background usage.I would have loved to have creative space to write a long as I want and have more of a variety in background drops. But over all I truly enjoyed this assignment.
Last semester I took a composition class and learned that a composition is a compilation of thoughts, ideas, images and such. When asked to write an essay we are really being asked to take the ideas of other writers and combine those thoughts with our own. To prove this, in the class we created both a collage and multi-modal piece. My multi-modal piece was on the over sexualization of the Black woman. I was able to do research as though I was writing a paper yet create, organize it and put it together visually with music and sound effects and images. I truly enjoy creating videos and searching for a way to visualize my ideas because it helps me tap into my creativity in ways I wouldn't normally while writing a regular paper . Doing multi modal projects that multi modal help
students realize that writing is composition and organization of thoughts. If students
can create videos and organize their ideas they can also write a paper. I also recently realized as a learner I am very visual.
Here is my "Who I am as a writer" multi modal piece:
Who I am as a writer
In the article "A Curriculum for English" one quote that resignated with me early on a stuck to me even wile reading the rest of the article as " what we are able to do with that clay depends on how many shaping options are available". This means so much to me because I believe academically I was a product of being taught to write one specific way and once I was able to get decent grades with that caliber of writing I was stuck there. When I entered college and was asked to write beyond the way I was taught, I couldn't. With the clay in my hands I had only learned to mold it one type of way , there were no other options available to me. Students must be taught other ways to write beyond " this is how you will have to write in college". The students in the class have different passions and goal and do not require the mastery of academic writing. And by offering a plethora of ways to write, students might even tap into a new found love for poetry or creative non fiction they didn't know they had!
In the second article the quote that stood out to me the most, partly because it was highlighted was "If we engage students in real writing task and include technology in such a way that it complements their innate way to find audiences and purposes for their work we can have them engaged in a digital writing process that focuses first on the writer, then on the writing then on the technology last". This way of thinking seems ideal in a class during times of technological advancements. Many students are already expressing their thoughts and opinions with the use of social media and are actively writing outside of them classroom. It is clear these students are writing and engaging outside the classroom because they have an audience. I believe students will engage in classroom writing when their writing has a purpose outside of the classroom! Students might not retain information they do not find useful and beneficial past receiving their grade for the assignment. Therefore I agree with the statement, using audiences and purpose might increase engagement of the students writing in the classroom.

Hi Kemi! I appreciate how your video seems to be more of a cohesive narrative than mine, and you fit so much in it. I like how you reflect about how you want to inspire; the song you chose definitely conveys that. I felt inspired by it. And relating hair to cultural stereotypes and Cancer patients and how your video/writing could serve perhaps, as you write to "test boundaries" and "surpass expectations" relates well to the potential of self expression. To change gears, in response to the Hicks article, your discussion of how students are already independently using technology makes sense to me. We have a no visible cell phone rule in our school, but the way I look at it is if the students are already using these little computers (smart phones) and probably know how to do things on them that I don't even know of yet, why shouldn't we embrace and find effective ways to incorporate their fluency with technology rather than to be resistant to it. We just have to prompt them to use it in accordance with our lessons instead of as a distraction from them.
